December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day has been commemorated since 1992 and every year has a different theme. This years theme is “Inclusion Matters: Access and Empowerment for People of All Abilities.”
Here in Vietnam, as well as in most other countries in the world people with disabilities still face many obstacles and barriers in society and there is a lot of stigma surrounding disability. Promoting empowerment enables people with disabilities to participate as full members of society and is an important step toward equality.
Apart from the main theme, each year the International Day of Persons with Disabilities has different sub-themes. This year, one of these sub-themes is the improvement of disability data and statistics. In order to improve living conditions of people with disabilities, there needs to be greater awareness of disability issues. One way to raise awareness is through the dissemination of information of about disability. Just remember, knowledge empowers.
